Quick fix: Windows 2003 black screen VM

When you attempt to log on to a virtual machine running Windows Server 2003 gives us only a black screen with exclamation point icon indicating the problem.

Of course, you can login using the same keyboard as you can not see places to enter a username or password.

Settings responsible for the colors are located in the registry: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors

The problem is caused by the lack of color settings to the default user and its value are set to black (0 0 0).

To solve this problem you need to export specified above registry key from a machine with the same operating system and import it on the problematic server. After this operation will need to restart the server.

Be sure to make a backup of the registry prior to the operation.

I also found a good VMware reference for this problem: KB 1005710
